Expert Seminar: Protecting Women’s Rights in Indonesia: The Role of the National Commission on Anti-Violence Against Women (Komnas Perempuan)

As part of its mandate to combat violence against women, Indonesia’s Commission is advocating a bill to eliminate sexual violence, and to prevent the criminalisation of extra-marital sex (zina). Given that Indonesia has the world’s largest Muslim population, the Commission also partnered with female Muslim clerics (ulama) to fight violence against women in the name of Islam, by countering patriarchal interpretation of the Qur’an. As a member of the Commission and Professor of Gender and Islam, Nina Nurmila will share her experiences and insights on these issues.
