Peter Baehr lecture by Barbara Oomen: ‘Human Rights between Law and Politics’

barbara oomenThe Netherlands Institute of Human Rights SIM of Utrecht University kindly invites you to attend the SIM Peter Baehr lecture 2015 on the occasion of our 34rd Anniversary. This year, we are honoured that the lecture will be delivered by Professor Barbara Oomen.

She will speak about: Human Rights between Law and Politics

The lecture on Friday 25 September 2015 will be introduced by Antoine Buyse, and followed by discussion with the speaker and informal drinks.

Barbara M. Oomen is the dean of University College Roosevelt and a Professor of Sociology of Human Rights at Utrecht University. She is a SIM fellow.

Professor Oomen holds a PhD (cum laude) from Leiden University and has published extensively on the relationship between law, culture and society in general, and human rights in particular. She previously held an endowed chair in Legal Pluralism at the University of Amsterdam. Recent research concerns human rights in the Netherlands and the rise of human rights cities. Prof. Oomen is a member of the Advisory Board of the Dutch National Human Rights Institution and chair of the Foundation Freedom Lectures. She is a former member of the Constitutional Review Commission and the UNESCO Science Commission, and a former chair of the Commission on Human Rights of the Advisory Council on International Affairs, and the Netherlands Platform on Human Rights Education.
